IBM Launches Compact z17 and LinuxONE Systems to Address Data Center Space and Cost Constraints
IBM introduces compact IBM z17 and LinuxONE 5 systems with rack-mount and single-frame options to address data center space and cost constraints, supporting up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory.

IBM has unveiled new IBM z17 and IBM LinuxONE 5 configurations, expanding its portfolio to include both rack-mount and single-frame systems for the first time. This move provides organizations with additional deployment flexibility to optimize data center space and operational efficiency. The new options are designed to support highly sensitive workloads while addressing record-low data center availability and rising rental costs, which exceeded $400 per kW/month in 2026, according to CBRE’s Global Data Center Trend Report.
The updated systems support up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory across two processor drawers, representing a 20% increase in core count and a 12% increase in memory capacity compared to previous models. The IBM z17 ME2 single processor configuration offers full-speed IBM z/OS environments with 10% greater throughput per core than the IBM z16 A02, though performance may vary based on workload and setup. Organizations can integrate these systems alongside non-IBM equipment to tailor installations to their specific needs.
The new configurations maintain the same performance, security, and ecosystem standards as the broader IBM Z and LinuxONE portfolio. They feature advanced multi-model AI inferencing capabilities through the IBM Telum II processor, Red Hat OpenShift AI, and the IBM Spyre Accelerator, enabling in-transaction predictive and generative AI. IBM also announced new software and management tools to simplify infrastructure operations and reduce the skills required to run the platform.
The new IBM z17 single frame and rack mount configurations, IBM LinuxONE Rockhopper 5, and IBM LinuxONE 5 Express will be generally available on August 12, 2026. IBM Infrastructure Management for IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE will launch on August 14, 2026, followed by IBM COBOL Elevate for z/OS on September 18, 2026.
