IBM announced at the Hot Chips conference a new dual-architecture mainframe processor designed to run both IBM Z and Arm-native Linux environments on future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. Developed through IBM’s April 2026 collaboration with Arm, the processor allows enterprises to leverage Arm’s software ecosystem alongside IBM’s established security and scalability for transaction processing and data-intensive operations. The chip integrates over 22 million Arm developers’ applications, including cloud-native and AI workloads, while maintaining IBM’s enterprise-grade reliability, encryption, and fault detection. IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms can scale to hundreds of cores and tens of terabytes of memory, supporting mission-critical workloads in regulated industries.

The processor, built on a 2 nanometer node, features 11 high-performance cores operating above 5.7 GHz, AI inference accelerators for real-time fraud detection, and a dedicated data processing unit for I/O acceleration. Each core can natively execute both Arm and IBM Z or LinuxONE instructions concurrently, prioritizing platform performance and security. IBM Z and LinuxONE systems are engineered for high availability, with hardware-level fault recovery and secure key management, ensuring robust operation for financial services, healthcare, and telecommunications sectors.

Christian Jacobi, IBM Fellow and CTO of IBM Systems Development, stated that the processor addresses the need for infrastructure supporting application modernization and AI integration without compromising performance or security. The collaboration with Arm aims to expand software choice for enterprises while maintaining the reliability and scalability of IBM’s platforms. IBM emphasized that the processor aligns with its hybrid cloud and AI strategy, offering clients flexibility in deploying AI workloads across critical infrastructure.

Mohamed Awad, Arm’s Executive Vice President of Cloud AI, highlighted the convergence of AI computing on Arm and the importance of bringing Arm’s ecosystem to IBM Z and LinuxONE. The partnership seeks to provide organizations with greater deployment options for AI in mission-critical environments, leveraging IBM’s enterprise-grade capabilities. IBM noted that future direction statements are subject to change and represent goals only, with the company continuing to focus on hybrid cloud, AI, and consulting services globally.
