IBM Study: As AI Scales Enterprise-Wide, CFOs Play an Expanded Role in Transformation
A 2026 IBM study of 1,500 CFOs finds AI integration is expanding CFO roles, with 56% gaining greater capital reallocation authority and only 6% reporting finance is AI-ready.
A new IBM Institute for Business Value study of 1,500 CFOs across 33 geographies and 26 industries, conducted with Oxford Economics from February to April 2026, reveals that 62% of respondents say their role has expanded into enterprise technology or AI strategy leadership. The survey highlights that as AI becomes embedded in enterprise operations, CFOs are increasingly shaping priorities, translating strategy into execution, and aligning investments with AI-driven transformation goals.
The study reports that 56% of CFOs now report greater portfolio-management and capital reallocation authority, while 54% have taken on more responsibility for business model or growth strategy design. Despite these shifts, only 6% of surveyed finance leaders say their departments have reached a transformation-ready state where AI is consistently embedded into workflows and decision-making at scale.
More than half of CFOs expect by 2030 to have greater responsibility for designing financial and ethical guardrails for AI (56%), shaping operating models and workforce strategies (55%), and driving enterprise value creation and portfolio strategy (52%). The findings identify a subset of AI-first CFOs whose organizations demonstrate advanced capabilities across governance, capital allocation, and long-term planning.
The report includes a playbook for CFOs on connecting enterprise strategy, AI governance, decision-making, capital allocation, and long-term flexibility to create value. It also features perspectives from CFOs at Daikin Industries, Yamaha Motor, Advantest, KPMG UK, and Lummus Technology on turning AI ambition into execution.
