Scheduled to begin in June 2026, the initiative will explore using Mission Buddy, a voice-based AI system, to allow operators to query probes for operational data and historical knowledge while maintaining controlled access. The goal is to reduce cognitive load on operators by enabling natural, conversational interactions with spacecraft systems.

The project aims to transform public engagement with space missions by enabling probes to respond to questions in their own voices. For instance, visitors to JAXA exhibitions could ask probes about their current location or mission objectives, receiving real-time, conversational answers. This approach seeks to make space missions more relatable by shifting from one-way communication methods, such as videos or text, to interactive dialogue that bridges the gap between technical data and public understanding.

Current spacecraft operations rely heavily on visual data and tacit knowledge passed down by experienced personnel, which is difficult to document or share. The conversational interface aims to capture and convey this tacit knowledge through dialogue, making it accessible to new operators and the public. Additionally, the system is designed to support multilingual communication, addressing the challenge of reaching diverse audiences while maintaining scientific accuracy in explanations about missions and spacecraft operations.

Beyond space missions, the conversational cognitive interface is expected to serve as a foundation for conveying complex scientific and technological information clearly and accurately across various fields. Future applications may include permanent installations in museums, educational programs, and streaming content, all aimed at fostering a deeper, more personal connection between people and space exploration. The initiative also envisions probes becoming active participants in their missions, strengthening teamwork and expanding public involvement through their unique voices and personalities.
