How Technology Is Preserving the Liberty Bell for America’s 250th Anniversary
Researchers, in collaboration with the National Park Service and Penn State Behrend, have created a high-fidelity digital model of the Liberty Bell using advanced scanning technologies to preserve it for future generations.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
The Liberty Bell has been digitally preserved using laser-line scanning, structured-light scanning, LiDAR, and photogrammetry, capturing details as small as 10-25 microns without physical contact. The project, completed in a nine-hour access window over two days at the Liberty Bell Center, involved capturing the bell and its surroundings from multiple angles. Researchers deployed extensive scanning equipment during non-public hours to ensure comprehensive data collection. The effort was conducted in partnership with the National Park Service and the VAR Lab at Penn State Behrend.
Lenovo provided a Lenovo Legion system to process and validate the massive scan datasets onsite, supporting data quality during the limited access period. The system facilitated visualization, quality assurance, and media workflows throughout the project. Christopher R. Shelton, Ph.D., Founder and Director of the VAR Lab, noted the system’s role in improving field workflow flexibility and efficiency during the constrained access window.
The resulting digital model serves as a permanent archival record and will be made available for education, research, and public engagement through interactive digital experiences. The project also enables future research, including acoustic simulations to explore how the Liberty Bell would sound if rung today despite its cracks. The digital preservation effort aligns with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
Future phases may include creating a full-scale 3D-printed replica capable of recreating the bell’s sound for educational purposes. The initiative demonstrates how advanced computing, AI, and digital preservation technologies can protect and share cultural heritage. Lenovo technology supported the creation of a high-fidelity digital record of the Liberty Bell, benefiting researchers, educators, and future generations.
