Microsoft has introduced a feature that enables players to convert physical Xbox disc-based games into digital entitlements, allowing them to access and play supported titles across the Xbox ecosystem more flexibly. The feature will be available for testing to Xbox Insiders beginning August 31, as part of the company’s broader initiative to preserve game access amid evolving technology. Players can claim a digital version by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game, after which the physical disc continues to function as before. This change supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where applicable, enhancing accessibility without altering the original disc’s role.

The initiative covers most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, with thousands of titles supported at launch and more to be added over time. While not every title will be available immediately, Microsoft emphasizes this as a step toward ensuring players retain long-term access to purchased games. The company highlights the importance of game preservation as hardware and distribution methods evolve, aiming to provide greater confidence to players about the longevity of their libraries.

Xbox Insiders are invited to test the feature starting August 31, with feedback encouraged through aka.ms/XBOXplayervoice. Support is available via the Xbox Insider subreddit, where official staff, moderators, and fellow Insiders assist with queries. Microsoft recommends checking existing threads before posting new ones to streamline assistance and improve community support.

Players interested in joining the Xbox Insider Program can download the Xbox Insider Hub for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC to gain early access to new features and contribute to the platform’s development.
