Mowi has established the largest dedicated research and technical division in salmon aquaculture, led by a global team of 17 experts spanning marine biology, fish health, technology, and data science. Their mandate is to drive industry-leading innovation across the entire value chain, focusing on sustainable, healthy, and safe seafood production. Strategic investments in digitalisation and automation under the Mowi 4.0 initiative aim to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance precision farming at every stage of production.
The company’s Smart Farming technologies, developed further in 2025, integrate advanced tools such as automatic feeding systems, real-time biomass monitoring, AI-driven fish welfare tracking, and next-generation underwater cameras. Additional innovations include lasers for lice control, closed containment systems for post-smolt production, and subsea farming solutions, all designed to improve fish health and welfare throughout the salmon growth cycle.
Sustainability remains a core focus of Smart Farming projects, with initiatives like Remote Operation Centres, automated water quality sensors, and net cleaning robots reducing reliance on service vessels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. These technologies streamline operations while contributing to Mowi’s broader environmental goals within the aquaculture sector.
Mowi Farming Norway is spearheading this transformation, with plans to complete the roll-out of Smart Farming technologies across its largest farming units within the next five years.
