NASA’s Vertical Motion Simulator at Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley has operated since 1979, offering a 60-foot vertical and 40-foot horizontal range to simulate aircraft and spacecraft motion. The facility’s latest upgrades replace outdated analog systems with digital technology, improving performance and accuracy. Advanced 4K projectors within a new dome provide near 20/20 visual clarity and an expanded field of view for pilots and researchers.
Diana Acosta, branch chief at NASA Ames, stated the upgrades enable more realistic mission tasks and better preparation for future missions. The system now automates image alignment and color-matching, a process previously requiring hours or days of manual work. These improvements enhance coordination and response times for crews managing complex scenarios.
Previously, switching simulation configurations required replacing large, heavy cabs tailored to specific vehicles, a time-consuming process. The upgrades introduce lighter, removable inserts that include only necessary controls, seats, and panels, reducing physical labor and cutting configuration time by half.
The enhancements position the Vertical Motion Simulator to support testing of next-generation aircraft and spacecraft before flight. This advancement aims to improve air travel efficiency, safety, and the success of future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
