Construction of Waiouru Defence Force homes to begin

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and local iwi Ngāti Rangi have signed an agreement to commence construction of 50 new homes at Waiouru Military Camp. Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith stated the project aligns with the government’s focus on providing essential housing for military personnel and their families. The initiative aims to ensure access to warm, safe, and modern living conditions for sailors, soldiers, and aviators. The agreement also strengthens the partnership between the NZDF and Ngāti Rangi, reflecting the iwi’s role in the land’s future.

Under the agreement, buildings and land will be sold to Ngāti Rangi, with the NZDF leasing them back under a long-term arrangement. This approach supports the iwi’s involvement while enabling the NZDF to retain operational control of the site. The partnership honours commitments made under the Ngāti Rangi Treaty settlement, ensuring mutual benefits. The NZDF will oversee the construction and development of the surrounding land.

The project is part of the Homes for Families programme, which is advancing new housing at military camps and bases across New Zealand. Additional homes are being progressed at locations including Devonport, Wellington, Whenuapai, Christchurch, and Manawatū. The programme aims to address housing shortages for military families nationwide. The NZDF is leading the initiative to improve living conditions for its personnel.

Completion of the 50 homes at Waiouru Military Camp is anticipated by mid-2028, following the signing of the agreement. The development will provide modern, high-quality housing for military families stationed at the camp. The project reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the wellbeing and retention of defence personnel. The NZDF and Ngāti Rangi will continue collaborating to ensure the project’s success.
