Government funds more classrooms for growing schools

Education Minister Erica Stanford announced the funding for ten schools facing significant roll growth, including 34 new classrooms and a gymnasium. The $32.8 million investment comes from savings generated through improved planning and delivery in the school property portfolio since July 2024. Stanford emphasized that every dollar saved is reinvested directly into classrooms and facilities where demand is highest. The initiative aims to address capacity pressures while maximizing value from existing resources.

The new classrooms will be distributed across Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, and Canterbury, with four satellite learning support rooms allocated to Arohanui Special School at Massey High School. Chapel Downs Junior College will receive its gymnasium ahead of schedule, with construction planned to begin in April 2027 and finish by mid-2028. Projects will use standard designs or offsite manufacturing to ensure efficient delivery and faster completion times.

All funded projects are expected to commence within the next 12 months, with work prioritized based on immediate need and growth pressures. The announcement follows the delivery of nearly 1,400 new classrooms nationwide over the past three years, improving learning environments for students. Stanford highlighted the government’s focus on cost-effective property management to stretch funding further and meet rising demand.

This investment builds on broader efforts to modernize school infrastructure while maintaining fiscal responsibility. The government’s approach includes reprioritizing savings from property portfolio efficiencies to directly benefit schools with the greatest need. By leveraging standardized designs and streamlined construction methods, the initiative aims to deliver more classrooms with fewer delays and reduced costs.
