The Regional Infrastructure Fund will provide a $1.55 million loan to establish a grain drying and storage facility in Carterton, Wairarapa. This initiative aims to reduce costs for local farmers who currently transport grain to Manawatū for storage. The facility will allow up to 4,000 tonnes of grain to be stored locally, improving efficiency and resilience for producers and contractors.

Associate Regional Development Minister Mark Patterson highlighted that transporting grain out of the region increases costs due to rising diesel prices and logistical challenges. The new facility will address these issues by keeping grain storage within Wairarapa, benefiting both grain producers and livestock farmers who rely on grain for stock feed.

The government also announced a separate $3 million loan to support a seed-cleaning and processing facility in central Hawke’s Bay, further enhancing regional agricultural infrastructure. Both projects are part of broader efforts to strengthen local supply chains and reduce reliance on distant storage and processing.

Funding for the Carterton facility is contingent on the formation of a grower-led company to oversee construction and operations, as well as the provision of at least $800,000 in grower equity. Additional requirements include securing a suitable site, obtaining necessary consents, and finalizing delivery and financial arrangements.
