Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, NVIDIA, and Universitas Gadjah Mada inaugurated the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) in Yogyakarta. The center is part of the national AI Center of Excellence initiative, aiming to foster AI innovation to address Indonesia’s key challenges. Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized the initiative’s role in advancing Indonesia’s AI sovereignty and economic growth.

The center provides researchers and students with access to NVIDIA’s AI platform and Indosat’s sovereign GPU-as-a-service platform, GPU Merdeka. It offers enterprise-grade computing, AI software, and technical mentorship, connecting Indonesian talent to a global ecosystem. Indosat’s CEO Vikram Sinha highlighted the initiative’s goal to expand AI access across the country and position Indonesia as a developer of AI technologies, not just a user.

Three initial projects focus on healthcare, agriculture, and disaster response. In healthcare, researchers are developing eNose-TB, an AI-powered tool to screen for tuberculosis using breath samples, aiming to make screening accessible in remote areas. The project is led by dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra from UGM’s Faculty of Medicine.

The agriculture project, SmartAgri, uses multimodal AI and edge computing to deliver precision farming recommendations tailored to Indonesian crops and smallholders. Meanwhile, Tech4Disaster is building a geospatial AI platform to provide early warnings and improve coordination during natural disasters, leveraging NVIDIA’s accelerated computing.
