The Genesis Mission
The U.S. Department of Energy and 17 national laboratories launched the Genesis Mission to create an exascale-powered scientific platform integrating AI, computing, and experimental facilities to accelerate discovery in energy, security, and advanced technology.

The Genesis Mission, led by the Department of Energy and its national laboratories, aims to build the world’s most powerful scientific platform by integrating AI, exascale computing, and experimental facilities. This unified system will accelerate discovery science, strengthen national security, and drive energy innovation, positioning the U.S. as a global leader in advanced technology. The initiative connects computing, data, and experimental resources to shorten the path from research to real-world applications, addressing critical challenges across energy, security, and science.
The Genesis Mission Consortium includes the Department of Energy, national laboratories, industry, and academia to foster breakthroughs across disciplines. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is leveraging its computing and experimental capabilities to tackle national priorities, such as fusion, fission, materials, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. ORNL’s Discovery system, powered by AMD processors and set for delivery in 2028, will combine high-performance modeling, simulation, and AI to advance scientific discoveries and explore the convergence of HPC, AI, and quantum computing.
A key component, the Lux AI cluster, will be deployed at ORNL in 2026 through a partnership with AMD. This system will expand the Department of Energy’s AI capacity, accelerating progress on critical problems identified in the Genesis Mission, including grid modernization and advanced manufacturing. The cluster will support high-impact research areas, enabling faster and more efficient experimentation and data analysis to drive innovation.
The American Science Cloud (AmSC) will serve as a secure, integrated environment linking DOE’s computing and experimental facilities. This cloud-based platform will optimize scientific workflows, connecting powerful infrastructure with domain-specific research to deliver solutions for national priorities. ORNL is also pioneering autonomous, AI-driven laboratory environments, creating a continuous loop between data, simulation, and experimentation to speed progress in key scientific fields.
