After 14 years of development, Factorio's final major update is out now
Factorio’s final major update, Patch 2.1, concludes 14 years of development with quality-of-life improvements and space logistics refinements, marking the end of active updates.
Developer Wube Software announced that Patch 2.1 would be the last significant update for Factorio, concluding 14 years of continuous development. The team stated the game had "reached a good place to conclude active game development," though smaller patches may follow. This decision comes two years after the Space Age expansion, which introduced interplanetary gameplay. The update focuses on refining existing features rather than adding new content.
Patch 2.1 introduces practical changes to space logistics, including rockets that can now carry multiple items instead of one. Players can also transfer items between orbiting platforms and import items from all available locations. A new constructable unloading bay attaches to landing pads, allowing inserters to move items directly onto belts or trains, simplifying interplanetary logistics.
The update overhauls biter expansion mechanics, scaling their grouping with evolution to ensure clearing nests remains a meaningful challenge. Biters now choose more natural locations for new habitats and expand territory regardless of early exploration. Fluid mixing prevention returns, and graphics for assembling machines, oil refineries, and rocket silos receive upgrades.
Additional improvements include a new rendering system for pumps connecting to rail fluid wagons, reducing setup complexity. Quality system tweaks for Space Age are also included. While future patches may arrive, 2.1 marks the definitive end of active development for Factorio.
