Framework has canceled its custom ultra-low-profile keyboard module for the Laptop 16 after three years of development, citing unsustainable costs and manufacturing challenges.
Framework has officially discontinued its One Key Module Developer Program, which aimed to create custom ultra-low-profile keyboards for the Framework Laptop 16. Launched in December 2025, the initiative sought to expand modular options for gaming laptops but ultimately failed to produce a viable product. The company attributed the cancellation to persistent cost and manufacturing hurdles that prevented the module from reaching a sellable price point.
The primary obstacle was cost, as Framework reported that material, assembly, and manufacturing yield expenses made the per-key pricing too high for mass-market sales. The company also noted that neither it nor its suppliers could justify the overhead required to produce the module at low volumes. Even with developer collaboration, the complexity of the design proved difficult to manage, particularly for DIY enthusiasts.
Framework explained that the One Key Module’s components were "too fragile for easy handling," complicating assembly even for experienced tinkerers. Despite the setback, the company is distributing remaining prototype modules to participants in the developer program. It has also released open-source documentation and firmware for the input module systems on GitHub to encourage further experimentation.
While the One Key Module will not see a wider release, Framework has provided open-source resources for those interested in tinkering with its input module systems. The company highlighted early developer designs on its blog as inspiration. Framework’s decision reflects its commitment to transparency, as seen in recent pricing adjustments for LPCAMM2 memory.
