Remedy’s Control Resonant, the ARPG sequel, expands Manhattan’s surreal threats with gravity-flipping gameplay and open-world boss encounters, launching September 24.
Control Resonant follows Dylan Faden, who awakens from a coma to find the Hiss and an alien force called the Patterning reshaping New York into a gravity-defying nightmare. Creative director Mikael Kasurinen describes the Patterning as distorting time, light, and even people’s perceptions, creating an unstable urban landscape where walls and ceilings swap unpredictably.
Art director Elmeri Raitanen explains the game’s visual inspiration comes from M.C. Escher’s impossible geometries and films like A Field in England, deliberately avoiding reliance on other games for its design. Lead level designer Anne-Marie Grönroos notes Resonant introduces Resonant bosses—twisted humans Dylan can defeat to gain their powers—but players aren’t forced to fight all of them, creating variable challenges based on available abilities.
Composer Petri Alanko crafted the score for a dancer Resonant using Fibonacci rhythms and kitchenware percussion, reflecting Dylan’s evolving identity through increasingly complex sound textures. The game’s soundtrack mirrors Dylan’s rebirth, shifting from simple sine waves to layered frequencies as his abilities and self-awareness develop.
Remedy emphasizes Control Resonant’s open-world scope, with multiple boss encounters available beyond the minimum required to progress. The game launches September 24 on Steam, and a PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct airs September 20, offering further details ahead of release.
