Polyarc, developer of the excellent VR platforming series Moss, is shutting down after 12 years: 'We are saying our farewells to each other'
Polyarc, the studio behind the VR platformer series Moss, announced its closure after 12 years, citing the end of active development and staff layoffs.
Polyarc, the studio behind the VR platformer series Moss, announced its closure after nearly 12 years of operation. The studio posted on LinkedIn that its time together had come to an end, marking the conclusion of its active development phase. Polyarc’s final release, Moss: The Forgotten Relic, arrived in July as a compilation of the first two Moss games, reworked for traditional, non-VR play. Despite positive reception, the game did not sell sufficiently to sustain the studio.
Founded in 2015, Polyarc debuted with Moss in 2018, blending third-person platforming with VR mechanics. Players controlled Quill, the mouse protagonist, while using VR touch controls to manipulate objects and solve puzzles. The game’s unique approach earned Polyarc over 160 awards and nominations, with strong commercial success on Meta platforms.
In 2025, Polyarc released Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss, a PvP strategy spinoff set in the same universe, but it failed to attract a significant audience. The studio later lost funding for a mid-development project and failed to secure an alternative funding deal, leading to layoffs of two-thirds of its staff earlier this year.
As part of its closure announcement, Polyarc shared a Google spreadsheet listing 30 affected developers and their contacts to assist with future recruitment. The studio expressed gratitude to its team, stating its work was now finished. All Moss games, except Glassbreakers, are currently on sale, with The Forgotten Relic at 20% off and the VR versions of Moss and Moss 2 at half-price.
