Avalon Hill’s deluxe rerelease of the 1989 board game HeroQuest is being adapted into a digital edition by Nomad Games, the studio behind adaptations of Talisman and Fury of Dracula. The game retains core mechanics like goblin-bashing, trap-disarming, and spell-casting, while adding digital conveniences such as solo play against an AI-controlled Evil Wizard. Online multiplayer will allow up to four players as heroes, with a fifth optional player controlling the villain Zargon. The American version of the game is used, omitting the character Morcar from the original UK release.

The most notable feature announced is a quest editor, enabling players to design custom maps and missions. Quests created by the community can be shared and downloaded through mod.io integration, expanding the game’s content beyond its base offerings. The developers have also hinted at incorporating rules from HeroQuest First Light, including a fixed eight-square movement option when no monsters are present. This change aims to streamline gameplay by eliminating the need for dice rolls to determine movement distance.

HeroQuest: Digital Edition is confirmed for release on Steam in 2027, with a closed beta playtest scheduled to begin soon. The adaptation follows the structure of the American version of the board game, ensuring familiarity for existing fans while introducing digital features. Nomad Games’ prior experience with board game adaptations suggests a focus on preserving the tabletop experience while leveraging digital tools.

The digital edition will include solo and multiplayer modes, with the latter supporting up to five players in total. The inclusion of a quest editor and mod.io integration positions the game as a platform for community-driven content, potentially extending its lifespan. Players can expect a blend of classic dungeon-crawling mechanics and modern digital enhancements when the game launches in 2027.
