Nightdive Studios is preparing a remaster of Thief: The Dark Project, but an unofficial patch called NewDark 1.29 has introduced a significant feature not expected in the official release. The update adds dynamic shadows to the game, allowing shadows to be cast by moving objects such as doors, guards, and Garrett himself. This change alters how players interact with light and shadow in the game’s environments, creating new tactical opportunities and challenges.
The dynamic shadows are generated using hardware transform and lighting, a feature enabled by the Dark Engine’s updated capabilities. This allows for GPU-driven effects that were not possible in the original game, including realistic lighting interactions between objects. For example, opening a door between a dark corridor and a brightly lit room now floods the corridor with light, while the open door itself casts a shadow behind it, creating potential hiding spots for Garrett.
The update also introduces additional visual enhancements, such as dynamic reflections, normal mapping, parallax occlusion mapping, and options for screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO), volumetric light and fog, underwater effects, and post-processing effects like luminance adaptation and light streaks. These changes bring the game’s lighting closer to modern standards seen in titles like Deadly Shadows and The Dark Mod’s Doom 3 conversion.
NewDark 1.29 is available for download via the TTLG forums, though access is currently restricted to premium members of storage.to. While the patch significantly enhances the original game’s visuals and mechanics, Nightdive’s remaster will focus on preserving the original experience with improved models and animations, without introducing fundamental gameplay changes.
