Tokyo Walled City looks set to fill the Deus Ex-shaped hole in my life
Tokyo Walled City, a retro-cyberpunk immersive sim inspired by Kowloon Walled City and *Deus Ex*, was unveiled at TGS 2026 with stealth, RPG, and survival horror elements.
More than a decade after the last *Deus Ex* entry, fans of cyberpunk stealth games have a new candidate: Tokyo Walled City, an indie immersive sim revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2026. Developer Grim Ronin positions the title as a stealth action retro-cyberpunk immersive sim blending survival horror and RPG mechanics, offering a narrative-driven experience set in a fortified Tokyo district. The game’s protagonist, Reiko Kimura, is a mercenary navigating a dense urban environment inspired by Kowloon Walled City and the visual aesthetic of *Blade Runner*.
The game’s trailer showcases classic immersive sim gameplay, including vent crawling, hacking, disabling security systems, and tactical light manipulation, while also borrowing movement mechanics reminiscent of *Dishonored*. Reiko’s agility allows for rooftop traversal and stealth takedowns, distinguishing the title from its inspirations. Grim Ronin emphasizes the game’s vertical design, with a hand-crafted city intended for freeform exploration and emergent gameplay.
Tokyo Walled City will launch in early access with a planned public alpha spanning 18 to 24 months, though no specific release date has been confirmed. The Steam page highlights planned features such as visibility and noise propagation tracking, a toolset including silent pistols, high-tech traps, and grappling hooks, alongside stealth and sound mechanics designed for tactical depth.
While Tokyo Walled City may temporarily fill the void left by the dormant *Deus Ex* series, Embracer Group has indicated renewed interest in reviving the franchise, though any new entry remains years away. The indie title’s blend of retro aesthetics, immersive sim design, and survival elements positions it as a potential standout in the genre for players seeking alternatives to long-awaited sequels.
