Valve is clearing out its discontinued Index VR headsets if you want a cheap piece of history
Valve is discounting remaining stock of its discontinued Index VR headsets to $399.20, with no bundled controllers or base stations available.
Valve has officially discontinued its Index VR headset, confirming that production has ceased and remaining units are being sold at reduced prices. The headset originally launched in 2019 for $499 but is now available for $399.20. Valve’s announcement emphasizes that supplies are limited and will not be replenished, urging potential buyers to act quickly if interested.
The Index VR headset is now being sold without controllers or base stations, which were previously bundled in a $999 package. Replacement left controllers and tethers are priced at $119.20 and $103.20 respectively, while right controller replacements are not listed. This suggests Valve is phasing out support for the Index ecosystem entirely.
Valve’s announcement was first indicated by designer Lawrence Yang last year but is now officially confirmed in a Steam news post. The company states that remaining Index headsets, controllers, and accessories are available at new prices while supplies last, with no indication of remaining stock quantities.
The Index VR headset was praised upon launch in April 2019 as one of the best VR headsets available at the time. However, the rise of wireless alternatives like the original Meta Quest later that year has made tethered VR systems less common, reducing the Index’s relevance in the current market.
