Valve working on Steam Frame strap that adds Index-like speakers and hot-swappable batteries, 'coming soon'

Valve has confirmed it is working on a first-party accessory for the Steam Frame that will add Index-style off-ear speakers, enhancing spatial audio without ear contact. The accessory will also include a hot-swappable battery, replacing the existing strap. Jeremy Selan, a software engineer at Valve, stated the modular design allows for easy swapping of the core module and strap components. He noted thermal and battery limitations as key factors in the modular approach.

Joy Lyons, a hardware engineer and audio expert at Valve, emphasized the goal of replicating the Index’s audio quality while maintaining the Steam Frame’s lightweight and portable design. The accessory will snap into place, though it will not be available at launch. Lyons confirmed pricing and details will be shared later. Selan joked about past misjudgments on release timelines, stating the team is working to make the accessory available as soon as possible.

The Steam Frame’s current speaker system is described as serviceable, with Lyons noting no complaints during testing. The headset’s design prioritizes portability, leading to the decision to place audio drivers in the strap rather than the headband. Early testing revealed vibration issues from bass frequencies, which were resolved by flipping one driver to cancel vibrations and maintain audio clarity.

The Steam Frame’s core module contains cameras and sensors for inside-out tracking, making it sensitive to vibration. Lyons explained that the dual drivers per side were adjusted to prevent screen jitter caused by bass, ensuring an open-ear experience. The final design aims to deliver immersion without overheating or restricting movement, balancing practicality with audio performance.
