13 Years Later, Warframe is About to Be Bigger Than Ever
Warframe’s 2026 expansion to the Tau solar system arrives alongside a new hub, a skyscraper-sized spaceship event, and a six-player mode replacing retired raids.
Warframe will launch its first entirely new solar system, Tau, in late 2026, marking a major expansion for the 13-year-old multiplayer game. Creative director Rebecca Ford acknowledged the challenge of balancing new content with revisiting older systems, noting the team is racing to prepare Tau while also updating existing features. The fall update, The Iceblade of Narin, debuts on Sept. 23 with a new Warframe and an in-game hub, setting the stage for the transition.
A special event, Epoch Operation: Tau, launches on Oct. 15 and introduces a skyscraper-sized spaceship shaped like a large nude humanoid, designed to surprise even casual observers. Alongside this, a new six-player cooperative mode called Glacial Defense will launch, replacing the retired Trials (raids) that were removed in 2018 due to low engagement and high maintenance demands. Ford described the mode as a test for six-player, slightly demanding gameplay rather than a direct replacement for raids.
Warframe has become a refuge for players migrating from Destiny and Destiny 2, offering fast-paced combat, varied weapons, and reportedly lower toxicity. However, high-level players can complete missions quickly, leaving some seeking more strategic teamwork. Ford admitted her own group often leaves Warframe to play Deadlock because the game lacks content for six players, raising questions about whether Glacial Defense will fill this social niche.
The team has made significant changes in recent years, including facial animation updates since 2015 and periodic revamps of older Warframes to align with modern gameplay. Some updates, like the horror mode Follie’s Hunt, faced community backlash, while others, such as Railjack mission additions, were considered risky. Ford emphasized the constant tension between developer vision and community expectations in a live-service model, where every change is a gamble but necessary to sustain the game.
