Bloodborne Movie Officially Sets Director in New Update
The Bloodborne animated film, produced by Seán McLoughlin, PlayStation Productions, and Lyrical Animation, advances with a director now attached, though specifics remain undisclosed. McLoughlin emphasizes creative freedom over a direct adaptation.
Seán McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, confirmed in an interview with IGN that the Bloodborne animated film is further along in development than when it was first announced at CinemaCon in April. While he did not reveal the director’s identity, McLoughlin stated that the project now has a clearer path forward, with key roles filled and a more defined story direction. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting a beloved intellectual property but expressed confidence in the team’s approach.
McLoughlin emphasized his commitment to honoring Bloodborne’s gothic horror setting and tone, describing the adaptation process as both exciting and stressful. He stressed the importance of precision in capturing the game’s atmosphere, acknowledging the difficulty of meeting fan expectations. Despite this, he expressed pride in the work being done and the team’s readiness to deliver a compelling adaptation.
The producer hinted that the film may not follow the game’s story beat-for-beat, citing recent successful adaptations like Fallout and Resident Evil that took creative liberties. McLoughlin argued that allowing room for new narratives within established universes often yields more interesting results. He suggested that Bloodborne’s lore, which relies heavily on subtext and item descriptions, provides ample opportunity for original storytelling.
Bloodborne joins other FromSoftware adaptations in development, including Sekiro: No Defeat, an anime series set to premiere globally on Crunchyroll in January 2027, and an Elden Ring film from A24, scheduled for theaters on March 3, 2028. The latter is reported to be A24’s most expensive production, with a $200 million budget.
