Bungie Officially Reveals Massive Marathon Revamp With New PvE Mode
Bungie unveils a year-long plan to revamp Marathon, adding its first permanent PvE mode, team deathmatch, and improved onboarding to broaden the game’s appeal beyond its original PvEvP focus.
Bungie has detailed a multi-month roadmap to evolve Marathon, transitioning the extraction shooter from a high-pressure PvEvP experience to one that supports a wider range of playstyles. The studio’s blog post highlights plans to introduce the game’s first dedicated and permanent PvE mode, alongside a team deathmatch mode and a more accessible onboarding process for new and returning players. The shift aims to address criticisms that Marathon was overly challenging and limited in appeal, particularly for casual or new audiences.
The Nightfall refresh, arriving in October, will serve as the first step in this evolution, followed by the Symbiosis update in December. Symbiosis promises to expand gameplay options with more approachable modes, including Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, where players can explore without fear of being hunted by others. The update will also feature a competitive Team Deathmatch mode and a redesigned beginner-friendly Perimeter map, alongside the introduction of Shell, Bishop, a high-performance robot samurai.
Shell, Bishop is described as a fast, surgical hunter-killer designed around speed, surprise, and melee damage bursts. Bungie emphasizes that its role and integration into player crews will be discovered through gameplay rather than pre-defined. The update also includes a new social space with a built-in firing range to improve the onboarding experience for newcomers.
Bungie acknowledges that Marathon’s original design was often too demanding and narrow in scope, despite positive critical reception. The studio now aims to broaden the game’s appeal by offering more than just an extraction shooter, allowing players to engage with its lore and gameplay in varied, lower-pressure environments. Additional details on Symbiosis and future updates are expected in the coming months.
