"It's a brave new world": GTA 6's PC port will release sooner than you think to avoid losing money to AI rip-offs, says former Rockstar tech director
Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij suggests Rockstar may accelerate GTA 6’s PC release to counter AI-powered unofficial ports of the PS5 version, due November 19.
Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij says Rockstar and Take-Two may move up GTA 6’s PC release date to prevent losses to generative AI clones of the upcoming PS5 version, launching November 19. He frames the risk as a new industry challenge for developers lacking Take-Two’s enforcement resources.
Vermeij recounted early GTA development tensions between PC and console teams, noting Rockstar initially prioritized PC builds before reversing the order for GTA 3 to align with stronger console sales. He described a 1990s incident where a PlayStation port degraded PC textures from 256 to 16 colors, sparking frustration among artists.
He explained that most publishers prefer simultaneous releases to streamline marketing, but GTA’s scale allows staggered launches. Vermeij warned that generative AI tools like Reverse Engineer Anything could quickly produce inferior PC ports, potentially undermining official releases.
Vermeij, now an indie developer working on Plentiful, acknowledged AI’s role in localization but cautioned against its use for core game content. He described AI-driven piracy as an existential threat to both indie and major studios, including Take-Two, despite legal recourse.
