Polyarc, the developer behind the Moss series, announced its closure this week via a statement on its LinkedIn page. The studio, which began in 2015, released Moss: The Forgotten Relic in July, a non-VR version of its original games. The statement described the closure as the 'end of an era' after nearly 12 years of game development. A spreadsheet with contact details for the team was shared for potential hiring opportunities.

The studio’s first game, Moss, launched in 2018 as a VR adventure puzzle game featuring the mouse protagonist Quill. A sequel, Moss: Book 2, followed in 2022, both earning critical acclaim. Polyarc also released Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss, a competitive VR strategy game set in the same universe, in 2023.

The Forgotten Relic, a combined version of the original Moss games without VR requirements, was released in July. Its performance, along with Glassbreakers, appears to have been insufficient to sustain the studio financially. The studio’s LinkedIn statement did not provide specific financial or sales details regarding the closure.

The closure comes amid challenges in the VR gaming market, which has not met the high expectations set for its growth. Despite this, Polyarc operated for over a decade, releasing critically acclaimed titles before its shutdown.
