"We clearly handled that responsibility poorly": Paradox ban Discord profile pics of historical figures born after 1800, after bust-up with Hearts of Iron 4 pla

Paradox Interactive, the developer of Hearts of Iron 4, has prohibited the use of Discord profile pictures depicting historical figures born after January 1, 1800, except for official in-game portraits. The decision follows a moderator’s removal of a profile picture featuring Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, sparking significant controversy. Game director Laszlo 'Batya' Pieper acknowledged the enforcement failure, stating that Paradox did not intend to take positions on political figures but handled the responsibility poorly.

The incident began when a moderator described Atatürk as controversial, referencing disputed involvement in the Armenian genocide of 1913–1922. This led to widespread backlash, including review bombs on Steam and accusations of inconsistent rule enforcement. Pieper apologized for the enforcement issues, clarifying that neither the games nor moderation were meant to judge historical figures, but acknowledged concerns about fairness and consistency in applying rules.

In response to the uproar, Paradox revised its Discord rules to explicitly ban real-world profile images of political or military characters born after January 1, 1800. The new rule aims to eliminate ambiguity and prevent future edge cases, though it has not yet been formally implemented. Community members will have seven days to comply once the rule is rolled out, though official in-game portraits, including Atatürk’s, remain permitted.

The situation escalated further with reports of abuse and threats directed at Paradox developers, moderators, and others. Pieper noted that individuals banned for such behavior will remain banned even after the rule changes. The developer emphasized its commitment to avoiding historical judgments while acknowledging flaws in its enforcement approach.
