Tesla’s full EV lineup can now also provide home backup energy
Tesla expands Powershare Home Backup to Model 3 and Model Y owners, allowing vehicles to power homes during outages when paired with Powerwall 3.
Tesla has extended its Powershare Home Backup program beyond Cybertruck owners to include new Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles. The feature enables customers to use their vehicle’s battery to supply power to their homes during outages. Tesla states the backup duration depends on the vehicle type and average U.S. household consumption of about 30 kWh per day.
To qualify, customers must own a Powerwall 3, a Wall Connector 3 (or Universal Wall Connector), and have purchased a Model 3 or Model Y after October 1, 2026. Powershare Home Backup is already available for all Cybertruck owners with Powerwall 3. The company highlights the combined value of Tesla’s vehicles and Powerwall systems in enhancing home energy resilience.
The feature can be enabled on new Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector installations without additional hardware or electrical modifications. For existing setups, an installer must verify the Wall Connector is on the backup circuit and complies with local codes before activation.
Tesla’s Senior Director of Residential Energy, Colby Hastings, emphasized the program’s role in positioning Tesla EVs as part of a broader home energy strategy. The company notes that enabling Powershare typically requires only a remote update by an installer in most cases.
