Sonos 27 Adds AI Control, New Ways to Move Sound, and an Easier App Experience to your Sonos System

Sonos 27, the next-generation audio operating system, launches as a free update for existing Sonos S2 products, though feature availability varies by device. The update introduces AI control through external assistants like ChatGPT and Claude via the Model Context Protocol, enabling users to adjust music without leaving those platforms. Headphone linking, an Early Access feature, allows Sonos Ace Ultra headphones to connect directly to the Sonos system, enabling seamless transitions between room and personal listening. The update also includes portable surrounds, where Move 2 or Sonos Plays speakers automatically switch roles between portable and home theater surrounds when placed near compatible soundbars.

Sonos 27voice, an AI-powered assistant arriving later this Fall in Early Access, is designed to understand music and mood, responding to natural language requests. Users can describe a desired atmosphere, such as a dinner party or morning routine, and the assistant will curate a soundtrack accordingly. The assistant is trained to interpret referential and feeling-first queries, even when song titles or artists are unknown. Sonos emphasizes that its AI assistant specializes in music and control, while its open platform allows integration with other assistants for broader functionality.

The Sonos 27app introduces a redesigned navigation system with Home, System, and Search tabs, alongside native swipe gestures and pinned favorite rooms. iPhone users gain Siri and Shortcuts support, while iPad layouts receive a refreshed design. A new virtual volume knob allows users to adjust volume by twisting two fingers on the screen, and presets for saving speaker setups and content will arrive later this Fall. The app was developed with input from the Sonos community to improve usability.

Sonos also previewed Sonos Custom Agents, planned for 2027, which will let users create personalized agents with unique models, personas, and voices within the system. The company highlights its open platform approach, arguing that no single assistant can excel at all tasks, and positions Sonos 27voice as a music-focused complement to this ecosystem.
