Sonos has launched Sonos 27, a significant update to its audio operating system that introduces AI control through external assistants like ChatGPT and Claude, allowing users to manage their system without interrupting music playback. The update, available in Early Access as Sonos 27mcp, is built on the Model Context Protocol and hosted at mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp, enabling seamless integration with third-party AI platforms. This marks Sonos’ first step into an open ecosystem where existing hardware gains new capabilities over time.

The update also introduces Sonos 27voice, a new AI-powered assistant designed to understand music requests based on emotions, memories, and contextual cues rather than just titles or artists. Users can describe a mood or situation, and the assistant will curate a soundtrack accordingly, with features rolling out later this autumn. Additionally, Sonos previewed Sonos Custom Agents for 2027, allowing users to create personalized AI agents with unique voices and personalities for home control.

Sonos 27 expands its Fabric system with Portable Surrounds, enabling portable speakers like Move 2 or Play to automatically switch between standalone use and surround sound for compatible soundbars such as Arc Ultra or Beam Ultra. The system uses high-frequency audio signals to detect speaker positioning and adjust functions accordingly, eliminating the need to manually reconfigure devices after use.

The Sonos 27app introduces a redesigned interface with tabs for Home, System, and Search, native swipe gestures, and a virtual volume dial activated by a two-finger rotation. Early Access features include Headphone Linking for Sonos Ace Ultra on September 29, allowing direct connection to the system and seamless switching between speakers and headphones. The app also adds Siri and Shortcuts support, an iPad layout, and upcoming presets for saved speaker configurations.
