Sonos has begun rolling out Sonos 27, a major software update for its audio system that transforms portable speakers like Move 2 or Play models into surround sound components for home cinema. The update introduces portable surrounds, which use Sonos Positioning Technology to automatically adapt speakers’ roles when placed near compatible soundbars such as Arc Ultra or Beam Ultra. Once the film ends, the speakers revert to portable use without manual reconfiguration. The feature eliminates the need for complex setup, allowing users to place speakers and let the system self-adjust. This capability is available immediately for eligible products as part of the free update.

The update also introduces headphone linking as an Early Access feature, enabling Sonos Ace Ultra to connect directly to the Sonos system without requiring a phone nearby. Users can move audio between speakers and the headphones with a single button press, leveraging the Sonos Headphone Engine 2 for secure connectivity and mobility throughout the home. The feature relies on new Wi-Fi antennas and encrypted credential storage in the Ace Ultra, launching on September 29 alongside the headphones. This integration allows listeners to transition seamlessly between room speakers and personal audio without interrupting playback.

Sonos 27app introduces a redesigned navigation system with fixed tabs for Home, System, and Search, swipe gestures, and pinned room favorites. iPhone users gain control from the lock screen and Dynamic Island, with added support for Siri and Shortcuts. The update also introduces a virtual volume knob activated by rotating two fingers on the screen, mimicking a physical dial. Presets for saving and recalling speaker, content, and volume combinations will launch later this fall, along with system status overviews. The app update is available now for all Sonos S2 products as part of the free software release.

Sonos is expanding its open platform with Sonos 27mcp, an Early Access feature enabling control via external AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude using the Model Context Protocol. This integration allows users to manage music playback directly from AI chat interfaces without leaving their workflow. Later this fall, Sonos 27voice will launch as an Early Access AI assistant designed to interpret music requests through natural language and associations, curating soundtracks based on described moods. Sonos Custom Agents, planned for 2027, will let users create personalized agents with distinct models, personas, and voices. Sonos 27 is available now as a free update for all Sonos S2 products, with varying feature availability by device.
