The recommended Subaru models met strict criteria, including a 'Good' rating in the IIHS driver-side small-overlap front crash test and average or better scores from Consumer Reports for braking and handling. Vehicles also required headlights rated 'Good' or 'Acceptable' by IIHS and equipped with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection that performed well in daytime tests. New vehicles on the list must have earned 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.
