Key points
·
Any payment provider, stablecoin issuer, or treasury team can tell you that to move real financial workflows onchain, they can't expose their flows.
·
Everyday payment activity also carries sensitive financial information.
·
Exposing balances, payment amounts, and transaction history by default is not how modern financial systems are designed to operate.
·
Full anonymity, however, doesn't solve any of these problems.

Sui introduced confidential transfers in public beta to address a core challenge in onchain finance: the structural barrier posed by public visibility of sensitive financial data. Balances, transaction sizes, and payment histories are exposed by default on public blockchains, revealing strategic and commercial information that financial institutions and individuals aim to protect. The new feature allows asset issuers to enable a confidential mode for tokens, where balances and transfer amounts remain hidden onchain while preserving the compliance and auditability required by financial systems.

The system is designed to mirror how traditional financial systems handle sensitive data, ensuring confidentiality without disrupting existing workflows. Public and confidential transfers coexist, allowing issuers and applications to apply the appropriate level of visibility based on context. Confidential transfers are enforced at the protocol level, with clear separation of roles: issuers define policy, analytics providers support compliance, and applications do not receive privileged access. Access to sensitive data is deliberate, tied to specific purposes, authorized by relevant parties, and fully auditable, aligning with existing financial and regulatory models.

Sui is collaborating with partners such as Bridge, TRM Labs, and Merkle Science to explore how confidential financial flows integrate with stablecoin ecosystems and compliance workflows. The goal is to support risk scoring, monitoring, and investigations without requiring public visibility into financial activity. This approach aims to prevent ecosystem fragmentation by providing a practical data model that meets the confidentiality, compliance, and interoperability needs of financial systems while leveraging the speed, cost efficiency, and programmability of decentralized infrastructure.

Confidential transfers are now available in public beta on Devnet, with a Testnet launch planned later this year. The open-source code, documentation, and example integrations—including a prototype wallet—are accessible via a public repository. Sui is actively engaging with partners across payments, infrastructure, analytics, and exchanges to gather feedback and refine the feature. The announcement underscores Sui’s focus on delivering decentralized infrastructure capable of supporting high-performance financial applications at scale.
