Making Sui Quantum Ready
Sui is preparing its blockchain for post-quantum cryptography by integrating quantum-resistant signature schemes ahead of NIST’s accelerated deadlines. The network will support ML-DSA-65 for native accounts and SLH-DSA for vaults, with phased rollouts starting this year.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
Sui is advancing its cryptographic infrastructure to address the quantum computing threat to blockchain security. Public keys exposed on-chain can be exploited by quantum computers using Shor’s algorithm to derive private keys, prompting the need for quantum-resistant alternatives. Google Quantum AI estimates such attacks could become feasible on fault-tolerant machines with under 500,000 qubits by March 2026. NIST’s updated timelines, accelerated by Executive Order 14412 in June 2026, require federal agencies to adopt post-quantum key establishment by 2030 and digital signatures by 2031.
The network will integrate ML-DSA-65 (FIPS 204) as a native signature scheme for everyday transactions, prioritizing Level 3 security following a July 2026 incident where an AI model reduced the key strength of a post-quantum candidate by half in 60 hours. SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s (FIPS 205) will secure high-value assets within Move smart contracts, allowing flexibility as industry standards evolve. Both schemes align with NIST’s post-quantum standards and the CISA/NSA/NIST roadmap, ensuring compatibility with broader cryptographic transitions.
Sui’s cryptographic agility enables post-quantum migration without disrupting network fundamentals, avoiding the need for a rebuild. Existing accounts can adopt quantum-safe keys via address aliases, preserving addresses and assets without forced migrations. The primary cost is increased transaction size due to larger post-quantum signatures, though verification remains efficient. Quantum-safe vaults are targeted for Mainnet this year, with native ML-DSA-65 accounts on Testnet by year-end and Mainnet authentication by Q1 2027.
The rollout follows an additive, opt-in approach, ensuring no immediate changes for users or developers. Independent audits are ongoing, with timelines subject to review. Sui’s approach supports multisig configurations requiring both classical and post-quantum keys, enhancing security without disrupting existing operations. The updates reflect Sui’s commitment to proactive cryptographic adaptation amid evolving quantum threats.
