Sunrun (Nasdaq: RUN) revealed its California distributed power plant will deliver up to 425 megawatts of peak dispatchable capacity this summer, making it one of the largest flexible energy resources in the state. The system relies on over 80,000 enrolled households with more than 110,000 home batteries, a fivefold increase since the plant’s 2024 launch with 16,000 participants. Customers receive compensation for their participation, while grid operators gain a cost-effective tool to manage rising electricity demand. The expansion follows successful pilot dispatches in May and June, demonstrating the plant’s ability to stabilize the grid during high-demand periods.

For the first time, the California distributed power plant will dispatch energy through two state programs: the California Energy Commission’s Demand Side Grid Support program and the California Public Utilities Commission’s Emergency Load Reduction Program. These programs operate under bilateral contracts with Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Southern California Edison. Sunrun coordinates dispatch operations from 4 to 9 p.m. daily through summer and fall, targeting peak demand hours when the grid faces the greatest strain. The company’s distributed approach avoids the need for new infrastructure, leveraging existing home batteries to provide reliable power without additional land or transmission lines.

Last summer, Sunrun’s distributed power plant delivered utility-scale capacity during a historic dispatch event on July 29, 2025, supplying over 360 megawatts on average for two hours. This event powered more than half of San Francisco during peak demand, showcasing the plant’s potential to address grid constraints.
