Sunrun to Supply Voltus with Energy Capacity for AI Hyperscaler Agreements
Sunrun and Voltus will supply energy capacity from residential batteries to support AI data center power needs under Voltus’s Bring Your Own Capacity program, targeting reliability and grid flexibility.
Sunrun, the largest U.S. provider of residential battery storage and solar systems, announced an agreement with Voltus to supply energy capacity from thousands of its home battery systems in the PJM and MISO regions. The capacity will support Voltus’s Bring Your Own Capacity program, which enables large energy users like AI hyperscalers to secure firm, flexible power for data center operations while contributing to grid stability. Sunrun will provide dispatchable power from residential storage-plus-solar installations, helping meet rising electricity demand driven by data centers and other high-load facilities.
Voltus’s Bring Your Own Capacity program allows customers to bring their own flexible resources, such as batteries and smart thermostats, to the grid in exchange for compensation. The program aggregates distributed energy resources to reduce demand during peak periods, providing a reliable alternative to traditional grid capacity. Sunrun’s participation expands the program’s reach by tapping into its extensive network of residential energy systems, which can be remotely controlled to deliver power when needed. The collaboration aims to channel investment into local communities while strengthening grid reliability for data centers and other critical infrastructure.
The partnership builds on Sunrun’s broader initiative with Renew Home and Tesla to unlock 16.8 gigawatts of flexible capacity from distributed energy resources, including home batteries, solar systems, smart thermostats, and electric vehicles. By integrating these resources into the grid, the companies seek to address the rapid growth in electricity demand from data centers and utilities in a cost-effective and scalable manner. The effort highlights the potential of residential energy systems to play a larger role in grid management and capacity provision.
Sunrun CEO Mary Powell emphasized the importance of maximizing available energy resources to meet rising demand, noting that the collaboration with Voltus leverages home batteries funded by hyperscalers to provide critical grid capacity. Voltus CEO Dana Guernsey described the program as a way to turn distributed resources into dependable grid capacity while delivering value to participants. The initiative reflects a broader trend of using residential energy assets to support large-scale infrastructure needs, offering a model for future grid integration efforts.
