Disney Legends in Conversation: Alan Tudyk

Tudyk, recognized in the Film & Voice category, described the honor as unexpected, noting the award came without a competitive process, simply as recognition for his work. He called the distinction preferable to being labeled merely 'talented.'

Tudyk recalled his childhood inspiration from Disney films like The Apple Dumpling Gang and The Shaggy Dog, which shaped his early connection to acting. He described these movies as formative, shaping his approach to performance and storytelling. The actor emphasized how these early Disney experiences influenced his career trajectory and artistic choices.

Reflecting on his voice work in animated projects, Tudyk explained how he develops distinct voices by studying animation and experimenting with vocal techniques. He cited his role as King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph as a turning point, where he blended multiple influences to create a layered character. For Frozen’s Duke of Weselton, he modeled the voice after James Cagney, demonstrating his methodical approach to vocal performance.

Tudyk discussed the challenges of motion-capture roles, such as Sonny in I, Robot and K-2SO in Rogue One, where physical performance and voice work converged. He highlighted the collaborative process with directors like Gareth Edwards, who trusted him to bring nuance to the roles. Tudyk also mentioned reprising K-2SO in the Disney+ series Andor, reuniting with cast members from Rogue One.
