Airports to go contactless in major boost for UK passengers
UK airports will introduce contactless eGates from 6 October, allowing passport-free entry for eligible travellers while maintaining border security checks.
A new contactless eGate system will begin rolling out at UK airports on 6 October, enabling eligible passengers to pass through border security without presenting their passport. The technology uses facial recognition to verify identity before full security checks are completed. Travellers who require additional checks will still need to present their passport or be directed to a Border Force officer. Border Force officers will continue to monitor all eGates and assist passengers as needed.
Testing indicates the contactless system is up to 25% faster than traditional passport-based eGates, reducing processing times for arrivals. The phased rollout starts at East Midlands Airport for British citizens, expanding to more airports and nationalities over the coming months. The system maintains the UK’s robust border security while improving passenger flow. Passengers are advised to keep their passport with them at all times.
The rollout follows recent government efforts to modernise the UK border, including the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. This change builds on previous measures to enhance border efficiency and security. The government states the new system will deliver faster, smoother journeys for legitimate travellers while upholding security standards.
Airports such as East Midlands and Birmingham are among the first to introduce the contactless eGates, with industry partners supporting the transition. The government highlights this as part of its broader digital transformation of the border system. The phased approach ensures a smooth implementation while maintaining security and passenger experience.
