7 Years Later, Ubisoft's Abandoned Open-World Series Officially Gets a Huge Update
Ubisoft plans a director’s cut of Watch Dogs Legion in early 2027, aiming to revive the dormant franchise with a remake rather than a new game.
Ubisoft once sought to establish Watch Dogs as a major franchise alongside Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, releasing three titles, but the series faded after Legion’s 2020 reception. The upcoming director’s cut of Legion, planned for the first half of 2027, will function as a remake to reintroduce the series. Ubisoft has not explained why it chose a remake over a new game, though cost likely played a role in the decision. The update may serve as a test for a larger revival if successful.
Watch Dogs Legion departed from the series’ tradition by allowing players to control any NPC, each assigned to a class with unique abilities. The experimental approach extended themes of technology and surveillance but failed to resonate with audiences. The director’s cut is expected to address these issues, though Ubisoft has not detailed specific changes. The franchise’s future remains uncertain despite the planned update.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed the company still views Watch Dogs as an important brand during a recent investor discussion. Guillemot stated the series remains a priority but does not expect it to be assigned to a specific creative division soon. The announcement follows reports that Ubisoft is exploring ways to revitalize the franchise after years of dormancy.
A Watch Dogs film, first announced in 2013, is in post-production with principal photography completed in 2024 and reshoots in 2025. No release date has been set for the movie, which has been in development for over a decade. The film’s progress suggests Ubisoft continues to invest in the franchise’s multimedia expansion despite the series’ stagnation.
