British Embassy Santiago presents recommendations to advance offshore wind development in Chile
The British Embassy in Santiago will present four studies on offshore wind development in Chile, offering recommendations to strengthen regulation, infrastructure, and local supply chains.
On 12 August, the British Embassy in Santiago will host an event at the Ambassador’s Residence to present four studies on offshore wind development in Chile. The reports, produced by ORE Catapult, were commissioned by the British Embassy as part of a joint initiative. The event will feature a panel discussion with representatives from Chile’s Ministry of Energy, InvestChile, Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, and CENTRA to explore next steps for the sector.
The studies identify Chile’s strong potential for offshore wind energy but emphasize the need for coordinated actions to unlock it. Key recommendations include improving regulatory frameworks, streamlining permitting processes, and ensuring timely planning for electricity transmission infrastructure. Strengthening local supply chains and workforce development are also highlighted as critical priorities.
The research underscores the economic opportunities offshore wind presents, particularly for regional growth in areas like Biobío. Revitalizing ports, attracting industrial investment, and creating skilled jobs are among the projected benefits. The reports stress the importance of an integrated approach, aligning energy, port, and spatial planning with a long-term strategy to provide investor certainty.
The studies draw on the United Kingdom’s experience in offshore wind, incorporating site visits and stakeholder consultations in both countries. They address ports, transmission, maritime planning, energy policy, workforce training, environmental considerations, and supply chains. The initiative, funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, aims to foster a competitive and scalable market for private investment in Chile.
