Funding boost for next generation of British fashion talent
The UK Government will provide £1 million annually for three years to support emerging fashion designers through the BFC NEWGEN scheme, ensuring continued mentorship and showcasing opportunities at London Fashion Week.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has committed £1 million per year for three years to fund BFC NEWGEN, the British Fashion Council’s initiative supporting emerging designers. The scheme offers financial support, mentoring, and opportunities to showcase collections at London Fashion Week, held biannually in September and February. The funding covers the 2026/27, 2027/28, and 2028/29 rounds, sustaining a programme that has operated since 1993. The initiative aligns with the UK’s industrial strategy, recognising fashion’s cultural and economic significance.
BFC NEWGEN has supported over 400 designers since its inception, including Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Anderson, and Simone Rocha. The programme is funded in partnership with the British Fashion Council and aims to nurture the next generation of British fashion talent. Creative Industries Minister Ian Murray and BFC CEO Laura Weir attended a showcase by Francesca Lake, a BFC NEWGEN-funded designer from Kingston, Jamaica, highlighting the scheme’s global reach.
The funding announcement underscores the Government’s recognition of fashion as a creative and economic driver. The multi-year investment demonstrates the impact of sustained support in fostering commercial growth and international visibility for emerging designers. The scheme’s recipients for 2026/27 include 16 designers, such as A Letter, Charlie Constantinou, and Karoline Vitto, who will benefit from financial aid and mentorship.
The British Fashion Council, a not-for-profit trade association, manages BFC NEWGEN with Government backing. The initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the UK’s fashion industry, positioning it as a global cultural and economic force. The BFC Foundation, established in 2019, further supports creatives through education and business growth initiatives.
