Investment in Defence Training Estate enhances realistic military training across the UK
The UK Ministry of Defence has invested £4.4 million in new trench training infrastructure at two Defence Training Estate sites to enhance realistic military training for the armed forces.
The investment includes new trench systems at Copehill Down Training Village on Salisbury Plain and Eastern European-style trench networks at Eastmere Village within Stanford Training Area (STANTA) in Norfolk. Delivered through a partnership between the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, the British Army and Landmarc Support Services, the projects aim to provide soldiers with realistic environments for contemporary operations. The facilities replicate modern battlefield complexities, featuring trench networks, fighting positions, command posts, shelters and firing platforms integrated into existing training areas.
The Ministry of Defence states that these projects support the Army’s modernisation programme by ensuring training environments evolve alongside changing warfare. The infrastructure creates representative conditions for personnel to develop tactical skills, decision-making and battlefield awareness. The investment forms part of a wider programme to maintain the Defence Training Estate’s operational readiness and relevance for current and future military challenges.
The projects were delivered with support from specialist supply chain partners, including Knights Brown Construction, 5C Consulting and Land Sculpture Civils for the STANTA project. The Ministry of Defence highlights that the investment ensures the estate remains fit for purpose, aligning with the ambitions of the Defence Investment Plan. The enhanced facilities are designed to provide lasting value to the armed forces by supporting realistic and demanding training scenarios.
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation notes that the projects demonstrate how collaborative delivery and customer insight can transform emerging training requirements into enduring capabilities. By investing in modern infrastructure, the Ministry of Defence aims to ensure the Defence Training Estate continues to evolve in step with the changing character of warfare, supporting operational advantage for Service personnel.
