UKDI relaunches Security Open Call

UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) has reopened the Security Open Call, inviting submissions for technologies that could enhance the UK’s security, public safety and protective security capabilities. The competition targets disruptive innovations aligned with priorities set by the Home Office and the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), covering areas such as secure data sharing, cyber threats, border security and organised immigration crime. Proposals must demonstrate a clear route to operational impact within two years and aim to deliver a prototype at Technology Readiness Level 6 or 7. The first application window runs from 3 August to 27 August 2026, with additional cycles planned through 2026 and 2027.

Funded projects may receive up to £350,000 and can run for up to 12 months, with an optional extension to 18 months for testing and trialling. The competition uses a two-stage process: Stage 1 requires an overview proposal, while successful applicants progress to Stage 2 for a full submission. UKDI’s Innovation Partners will provide support throughout the application process to help innovators refine their proposals.

The Security Open Call focuses on technologies that address specific challenge areas identified by the Home Office and NPSA. Home Office priorities include tackling online harms, strengthening national security resilience and improving border and immigration outcomes through innovation. NPSA’s focus areas include vehicle screening, crowd screening, hostile reconnaissance detection and AI-enabled training technologies.

UKDI aims to accelerate the development of technologies that enhance the UK’s security at home and abroad while supporting growth in the UK’s innovation sector.
