IPO patents service roadmap
The UK Intellectual Property Office has published a roadmap outlining planned improvements to its new patents service over the next year, including streamlined processes and reduced downtime.
The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has released a September update detailing planned enhancements to its new patents service, launched on 1 April 2026. The roadmap outlines improvements scheduled over the next year, including streamlined processes for assigning representatives and displaying full addresses during patent applications. The update also highlights ongoing work to improve account creation and sign-up procedures, with further changes expected in Autumn 2026.
A key improvement introduced on 10 September was the first 'zero downtime' update, reducing service disruption by automating technical processes. The IPO also plans to retire legacy patents services and develop a contingency filing service to ensure applications can still be submitted if the new service is unavailable. Additional features include the ability to upload response letters in PDF format and manual input of page numbers for accurate fee calculations.
Future updates, expected in winter 2026 to 2027, include a local address book for managing contacts, changes to name and address features, and improved search functionality. The service will also introduce prompts to prevent accidental withdrawals of applications and allow users to upload supporting information when withdrawing. These changes aim to enhance user experience and reduce errors.
Further improvements planned for spring 2027 include digital reminders for patent renewals and cessation notices. The IPO will also introduce a submission receipt feature immediately after patent applications are submitted, providing users with confirmation. Full details of all updates are available on the patents service updates and improvements page.
