MMO prepares to resume I-VMS enforcement activity as installations progress

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is preparing to resume normal I-VMS enforcement for licensed English fishing vessels under 12 metres as the installation of Nemo devices progresses. More than 92% of eligible vessels have registered for the device, with nearly half already installed. The remaining installations are expected to be completed within weeks, enabling a return to standard compliance checks. Vessel owners are urged to purchase approved devices if they have not already done so.

Almost half of the registered Nemo devices have been installed, with the remainder set to be completed over the coming weeks. The MMO has contacted affected licence holders to provide guidance on updating records or purchasing devices. Vessels must carry an MMO-approved I-VMS device capable of transmitting data to the UK VMS Hub to meet regulatory requirements. Owners awaiting installation should prepare their devices by charging for 48 hours and ensuring the green light is active.

Airtime contracts and renewals for I-VMS devices are expected to commence once normal enforcement resumes. CLS UK will notify vessel owners before any airtime payment requests are issued. Fishermen with concerns about their Nemo device, including potential faults, are advised to contact CLS UK promptly, even beyond warranty periods. Remedial work or replacements will be assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure compliance.

I-VMS data supports fisheries management by providing accurate vessel position information, aiding fair regulation across the fleet. The data also assists in assessing displacement of fishing activity for compensation purposes.
