Warsaw Human Dimension Conference 2026: UK statement to opening session
The UK reaffirms its commitment to human rights, democratic institutions, and media freedom at the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference 2026, condemning Russia’s violations in Ukraine.
Deputy Ambassador James Ford reiterated the UK’s dedication to human rights, democratic institutions, and media freedom during the opening session of the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference 2026. He condemned Russia’s violations in Ukraine and pledged continued support for civil society and the OSCE’s autonomous institutions, emphasizing their role in collective security.
The UK strongly supports the OSCE’s comprehensive approach to security, with democracy, human rights, and the rule of law at its core. It highlighted the vital work of ODIHR in election observation, democratic governance, and human rights, particularly amid growing hybrid threats and attempts to undermine elections.
As 2026 co-chair of the Media Freedom Coalition, the UK will champion independent and pluralistic media and support the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. Minister Elmore will attend the conference to address these issues, focusing on the challenges faced by journalists across the OSCE region.
The UK condemned Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine, including attacks on civilians and infrastructure, and its repression in occupied territories. It reiterated support for Ukraine and accountability for Russia, commending ODIHR’s role in documenting violations and preparing for future democratic processes.
