We call on the transitional government of South Sudan to cooperate fully with UNMISS: UK statement at the UN Security Council
The UK urges South Sudan’s transitional government to halt violence, ensure credible elections, and cooperate fully with UNMISS to address humanitarian and political crises.
The United Kingdom has reiterated the urgent need for an immediate end to hostilities in South Sudan, emphasizing that ongoing violence continues to displace civilians and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. Ambassador Kate Foster highlighted that women and girls are disproportionately affected, including through conflict-related sexual violence. The UK called for all parties to engage in genuine and inclusive dialogue, while welcoming the collaborative efforts of the African Union, UN, and IGAD to support peace efforts.
The UK stressed that any elections must be credible, peaceful, and inclusive to avoid undermining stability. It noted that elections should only proceed when conditions outlined in the 2018 peace agreement are met, including political space, security, and inclusive participation. The UK warned that elections excluding major parties could reignite conflict and undermine democratic progress, underscoring the importance of transparent and fair electoral processes.
The UK emphasized the need for responsible and transparent management of public resources to address severe underfunding of essential services. It highlighted that only 2% of the national budget is allocated to health and education, with critical consequences for ordinary citizens. The statement also raised concerns about the potential spread of Ebola into South Sudan, stressing the importance of functioning healthcare systems to mitigate risks.
The UK called on South Sudan’s transitional government to fully cooperate with UNMISS, which plays a vital role in supporting peace and stability. UNMISS provides protection, responds to intercommunal violence, maintains a presence in conflict-prone areas, and facilitates humanitarian aid. The UK urged the government to ensure UNMISS can carry out its mandate without obstruction, emphasizing that the people of South Sudan deserve a future defined by peace, dignity, and accountable governance.
