Deadly floods cause widespread destruction in China, Nepal

Severe flooding in China’s Tibet autonomous region and across Nepal has led to significant casualties, missing persons, and destruction of infrastructure, according to UN agencies. The UN Spokesperson confirmed the Secretary-General’s condolences and noted ongoing efforts to assess the full scale of the disaster. In Nepal, authorities report 10,000 households require immediate relief after settlements, roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities were damaged or destroyed. The UN humanitarian agency OCHA stated roads remain cut off and electricity disrupted in affected areas.

UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal Lila Pieters Yahia is leading relief coordination with partners to address what is expected to be substantial humanitarian needs. The UN’s emergency response includes rapid assessments and support for government-led efforts in both countries. The UN office in China is also reporting significant damage and casualties in the Tibet autonomous region. The UN emphasized its readiness to assist further as needs become clearer.

Humanitarian partners are mobilizing in Nepal, with Save the Children deploying staff to the flood-hit Nuwakot district and the Nepalese Red Cross dispatching 200 emergency shelter packages. The UN humanitarian community is providing immediate assistance and remains on standby to scale up support as required. Assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage and humanitarian needs.

The UN highlighted that rapid emergency response is a top priority, including for the severe flooding in Nepal. The organization is coordinating with local authorities and partners to ensure timely delivery of aid.
