Vercel’s AI Gateway now includes DeepSeek Search and DeepSeek Fetch as available tools, allowing developers to integrate web search and page content retrieval directly into their applications. Search returns relevant pages with titles, URLs, and summaries, while Fetch retrieves the full page content in Markdown format for model processing. Both tools operate through a unified API key, eliminating the need for a separate DeepSeek account.

To use these tools, developers must update to AI SDK versions 6.0.321 or later for v6, or 7.0.160 or later for v7, and install the latest SDK via pnpm add ai@latest. The AI_GATEWAY_API_KEY environment variable must be set to authenticate requests. The tools support any model capable of tool calling, enabling flexible integration across different providers without changing the underlying setup.

DeepSeek Search and Fetch each incur a cost of $0.75 per 1,000 billable requests, with no charges for failed requests, timeouts, or empty results. Model token usage is billed separately, ensuring transparent pricing for both tool and model expenses. The tools can be combined, with Fetch capable of retrieving content from any search tool result URL, while Search includes a fallback mechanism directed by the model.

AI Gateway consolidates model interactions into a single API, simplifying usage tracking, cost management, and routing configurations. Users can opt to use an AI Gateway API key or bring their own provider key, providing flexibility in how they manage access and billing. The integration aims to streamline workflows by reducing the need for multiple service accounts and APIs.
